Early adolescence is a time of enormous and often confusing changes for your child, which makes it an often-challenging time for both of you. Being tuned into your child helps you to stay close to them and have more influence on the decisions they make in their life.

Skills You Need.

The idea is simple, but it takes time and energy. You can make a difference in your child’s life.

• Set aside at least 10 minutes a day to focus on your child.
• Actively listen and respond.
• Express yourself in “I” messages, tell them how YOU feel instead of criticizing them.
• Be honest in your communication. Respect your child.
• Be accepting. Be consistent. Keep your sense of humour.
• Try not to make assumptions or accusations.
• Don’t be sarcastic.
• Don’t be put off my your child’s reluctance to talk. They will.
